Did Mary redeem her firstborn? ~ Cross reference of Luke 2:22 to Exodus 13:12
Luke uses the cross reference from Exodus 13 where G-d speaks about how a firstborn male child belongs to him. He then uses Leviticus 12 where G-d speaks about the purification offerings that the mother needs to make after childbirth. This applies to every child not just for the firstborn male. I am not trying to spilt hairs here, but Luke misquotes Torah to say that 2 turtle doves were to be offered for the purification when Leviticus says that the mother should offer a sheep for a burnt offering and a dove for sin offering. Only in case she is poor, she can offer two doves. One dove for a burnt offering and the other dove for a sin offering. Christians justify this passage saying that Mary was poor so she did the right thing by offering 2 doves because Leviticus allows it. The bigger issue I see is if she was poor how did she redeem Jesus? She had to offer up 5 silver shekels to redeem her firstborn male child.
