Did Mary redeem her firstborn? ~ Cross reference of Luke 2:22 to Exodus 13:12

Luke uses the cross reference from Exodus 13 where G-d speaks about how a firstborn male child belongs to him. He then uses Leviticus 12 where G-d speaks about the purification offerings that the mother needs to make after childbirth. This applies to every child not just for the firstborn male.

I am not trying to spilt hairs here, but Luke
misquotes Torah to say that 2 turtle doves were to be offered for the purification when Leviticus says that the mother should offer a sheep for a burnt offering and a dove for sin offering. Only in case she is poor, she can offer two doves. One dove for a burnt offering and the other dove for a sin offering.

Christians justify this passage saying that Mary was poor so she did the right thing by offering 2 doves because Leviticus allows it. The bigger issue I see is if she was poor how did she redeem Jesus? She had to offer up 5 silver shekels to redeem her firstborn male child.

Off topic but, Luke makes Caesar Augustus call for a census so Mary can give birth to Jesus in Bethlehem. This was important as Micah 5:1 has a prophecy that the messiah will come out of Bethlehem.

If you find details on "Luke's Census" let me know.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Luke 2:22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[b]), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[c]

Exodus 13:2 "Sanctify to Me every firstborn, every one that opens the womb among the children of Israel among man and among animals; it is Mine."

Exodus 13:12 that you shall give over to the Lord whatever opens the womb, and every miscarriage that opens the womb of an animal which will be yours, the males belong to the Lord.

Leviticus 12:8 And if she cannot afford a sheep, she shall take two turtle doves or two young doves: one as a burnt offering and one as a sin offering. And the kohen shall effect atonement for her, and she shall become clean.

  • G-d says that every firstborn male human or animal is his
  • G-d also makes it clear that every firstborn unclean animal [like a donkey] and every firstborn human must be redeemed from G-d by offering 5 shekels of silver = 20 gerahs. You see this in numbers 18:16.
  • G-d also tells that the firstborn males of clean animals like of ox, sheep cannot be redeemed and have to be offered as a burnt offering. See Numbers 18:17
  • Christians claim that Mary was poor so she could only afford 2 doves for the purification process. Luke does not talk about how Jesus who was her firstborn male child was redeemed.
Numbers 18:15 Every first issue of the womb of any creature, which they present to the Lord, whether of man or beast, shall be yours. However, you shall redeem the firstborn of man, and the firstborn of unclean animals you shall redeem. 16 Its redemption [shall be performed] from the age of a month, according to the valuation, five shekels of silver, according to the holy shekel, which is twenty gerahs. 17 However, a firstborn ox or a firstborn sheep or a firstborn goat shall not be redeemed, for they are holy; their blood shall be sprinkled on the altar, and their fats shall be burned as a fire-offering, as a pleasing fragrance to the Lord.
