They will look on him whom they pierced ~ Cross reference of John 19:37 to Zechariah 12:10

If one reads the whole of Zechariah 12 they will easily understand that this has nothing to do with Jesus. It is a prophecy that is yet to happen and will happen when G-d brings in the messianic age.

Let me share what this chapter is all about and you can see how this has nothing to do with Jesus dying on the cross and people looking at him.

All Greek Text references are from NIV and Tanakh references are from Chabad.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

John 19:37 and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”[d]

[Chabad] Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour out upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplications. And they shall look to me because of those who have been thrust through [with swords], and they shall mourn over it as one mourns over an only son and shall be in bitterness, therefore, as one is embittered over a firstborn son.

[NIV] Zechariah 12:10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.
  • If you read the NIV version and Chabad version you will see 2 translation issues that I highlighted. The correct translation is
    • They will look to G-d because they mourn for those who were pierced. [by the enemies]
    • Those [plural] is the right translation not him [singular]
    • See the image of the interlinear of Zechariah 12:10
  • This prophecy is about Israel and not about the messiah
    • Zechariah 12:1 The prophecy of the word of the Lord concerning Israel: Says the Lord, Who stretches out the heavens and founds the earth and forms the spirit of man within him:
  • In this passage G-d is speaking
  • If you read the whole chapter, It is talking about how G-d will make Jerusalem a target for all the nations and in this even Judah will be forced to join the nations.
    • Zechariah 12:2 Behold! I am making Jerusalem a cup of weakness for all the peoples around, and also on Judah, [that he] shall be in the siege against Jerusalem.
  • During this time Judah will turn against the nations and join Jerusalem and fight against the nations
    • Zechariah 12:5 And the princes of Judah shall say to themselves, "The inhabitants of Jerusalem were my strength through the Lord of Hosts, their God.
  • On that day G-d will strengthen Judah and allow them to fight against the Nations.
    • Zachariah 12:6 On that day I will make the princes of Judah as a fiery stove among wood, and as a brand of fire among sheaves. And they shall consume on the right and on the left all the nations round about, and Jerusalem shall still stay in its place in Jerusalem.
  • There will be casualties both in Judah and Jerusalem and also a leader from the tribe of Joseph will be killed. That is what the rest of the chapter is talking about
