Was Jesus the high priest? ~ Cross reference of Hebrews 5:5-6 to Psalm 2:7, Psalm 110:4

Hebrews 5 continues to try and assert that Jesus is the high priest. Like I said in the post on Hebrews 3:11. I think this is a theology that Christians came up with to justify the dead messiah.

So the confusion I see is that the gospels struggled hard to establish that Jesus is the messiah who came in the line of David [Judah] and here Hebrews tries to make Jesus come from the line of Aaron.

If you read the 4 gospel, you will see the way the Christology of Jesus evolved. From being a human in Mark, you will see John having Jesus create the universe. Scholars believe Mark was the first gospel that was written around 70 CE, Matthew & Luke were written sometime in 85 CE and John was last to be written around 90 CE.
  • In Mark Jesus is a human being and there is no virgin birth. Jesus becomes the son of god when he is baptized by John the dipper.
  • Matthew and Luke make Jesus son of god through the virgin birth
  • John has Jesus son of god from eternity
  • Paul preached that Jesus became the son of god on his resurrection.
None of the gospels had an author until 150 CE when church fathers decided to tag names to each of the gospels. I don't mean to say that there was no contribution from these "authors". The word of mouth stories were passed on from groups of people till it was thought they should put them into writings.

All the disciples were illiterate Aramaic speaking people. I don't think they could even read the Hebrew scrolls. So clearly they would have told stories for decades and used some form of poems to make sure the facts were kept intact.

Yet you find such inconsistencies in the 4 gospels and instead of accepting the above facts being the cause for these issues, Christians claim the holy spirit is the author of the Greek text and every word is accurate. What amazes is that you will find tons of blogs where Christians "defend the lord" with painful explanations to make the Greek text look right.

I stay away from these discrepancies as we have bigger issues in the core beliefs and teachings of the Greek text that do not align with what G-d said in the Tanakh.

Important point to note is the high priest is always from the line of Aaron. There is no passage in the Greek text that even attempts to establish this line for Jesus to be a high priest. One other issue is a man can have one father and the Christians need to pick if Jesus is from the line of David or the line of Aaron.

Kind of convoluted situation which Christians solve by spiritualizing this whole issue by saying that Jesus is both a king and a priest and this is a heavenly plan. This is an assertion that has no support from Tanakh.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Hebrews 5:5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” 6 And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

Psalm 2:7 I will tell of the decree; The Lord said to me, "You are My son; this day have I begotten you.

Psalm 110:4 The Lord swore and will not repent; you are a priest forever because of the speech of Malchizedek.

Both the passages that the Greek text cross reference are used out of context and we will examine this in this Post.

    Psalm 2
    • This Psalm most likely written about David. Though the author is not mentioned it makes sense based on the content of the Psalm.
    • All this Psalm is saying is that G-d has appointed his King on his holy mountain [Zion] and the gentile nations are trying to oppose him.
    • The writer says, G-d will destroy these nations and kings. That is what happened during David's reign. G-d placed David as the king of Israel and through him G-d defeated all the nations around him to the point that no king raised against David during his time and also through Solomon's reign.
    • Where in Psalm 2 does David talk about crucifixion or resurrection.
    • Christians believe Jesus existed eternally so how can he become the son of god “today”
    • In context this is a Psalm that aptly applies to David than to Jesus who never ruled, nor had a throne or nor defeated any nations.
    Psalm 110
    • Hebrews quoting Psalm 110 to say that Jesus was of the order of Malchizedek does not make a sound cross reference for a simple reason that the priestly role was only established with Aaron.
    • There is nothing mentioned about Malchizedek offering any sacrifices for sins anywhere in Tanakh.
    • Prior to mount Sanai anyone could offer a thank offering to G-d through an altar they made with stones and sacrificed animal(s). There is no mention of any sin offerings being made or any temple designated for sacrifices.
    • There is no clear indications of who Malchizedek was. All we know from Genesis 14:18 that that he was the king of Salem & a high priest to G-d.
    • One thing that makes sense to compare David to Malchizedek as both were kings & both were accountable for judging the people justly. Aside offering sacrifices, the priests were involved in judging people in live with Torah laws.
    • Priests from the line of Aaron were expected to teach Israel the Torah & also judge issues people have in line with the Torah. So assuming that the priests job is to make sacrifices only is not correct. Even in the Luke you see that Zechariah had a turn when the news of John the dipper's birth was given to him.
      • Ezekiel 44:23 And My people shall they teach the difference between holy and profane, and cause them to discern between the impure and the pure. 24 And in dispute they shall stand in judgment, according to My ordinances shall they decide it
      • Malachi 2:6 True teaching was in his mouth, and injustice was not found on his lips. In peace and equity he went with Me, and he brought back many from iniquity. 7 For a priest's lips shall guard knowledge, and teaching should be sought from his mouth, for he is a messenger of the Lord of Hosts.
    • There are several passages that call all of Israel as priests to G-d, this does not mean that they can all be performing the role of a priest.
      • Exodus 19:6 you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”
      • Isaiah 61:6 And you shall be called the priests of the Lord; 'servants of our God' shall be said of you; the possessions of the nations you shall eat, and with their glory you shall succeed [them].
    • Only the children of Aaron from the tribe of Levi can make sacrifices on the altar. Calling Jesus as a high priest also does not make sense, as the messiah is always mentioned to be from the tribe of Judah which he did not fulfill and so I guess the Christians had to fall back on plan B to say that he is a priest this time and next time he will be the king.
