Are the foolish shaming the wise? ~ Cross reference of 1 Corinthians 1:31 to Jeremiah 9:23
Paul here is addressing the people in Corinth and telling them that god chose them to be believers of Jesus. He makes it very clear that their intellect, influence or pedigree was not the reason that god chose them.
He then tells them that they should not boast about how they figured out about the cross and how they got their salvation, but if they wish to boast that should only boast about what the lord did for them on the cross.
I think he quotes Jeremiah 9:23 [9:24 in the Greek text] to say that it is written about what he just said in Tanakh.
Let us see what Jeremiah 9:23 in context is saying.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.
1 Corinthians 1:26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things and the things that are not to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
Jeremiah 9:21 Speak; Thus says the Lord: Indeed, the carcasses of men shall fall like dung on the open field, and like sheaves after the reaper, with none to gather them! 22 Thus says the Lord: Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom, nor the strong man boast of his strength, nor the rich man boast of his riches. 23 But let him that boasts exult in this, that he understands and knows me, for I am the Lord Who practices kindness, justice and righteousness on the earth; for in these things I delight, says the Lord. 24 Behold, days are coming, says the Lord, when I will punish every circumcised one with his uncircumcision. 25 Egypt, Judah, Edom, the children of Ammon, Moab, and all those cast off to the corners, who dwell in the desert, for all the nations are uncircumcised, and all the house of Israel are of uncircumcised hearts.
- Jeremiah is prophesying to Judah and Jerusalem that they are not obeying G-d nor living according to his law. He tells them that they are trying to be wise in their own eyes and are relying on their own might.
- G-d says all this will mean nothing when he takes vengeance on them.
- In verse 23 you see clearly that G-d is saying that it they boast they need to boast in THE ONE G-D of the universe who desires kindness, justice and righteousness.
- All this happened when Nebuchadnezzar came and captured Jerusalem and destroyed the temple. Just as G-d had told, they were exiled to Babylon. This prophecy is fulfilled. [Read Jeremiah 20].
- You see nothing here about people who have found the cross because of god's grace and thereby have attained wisdom. righteousness, holiness & redemption.
- Paul just pulled a quick one by switching a verse that is talking about G-d and tagged it to Jesus.
