Did Peter think Jesus was holy? ~ Cross reference of 1 Peter 1:16 to Leviticus 19:2

Peter advises his readers to be alert & live in the hope of the grace that Jesus will shower on them when he returns. I think Peter was expecting Jesus to come back any day soon.

He then tells the reader that they need to let go the evil ways they lived before coming to know about Jesus.

So far so good, but then he claims that Jesus was holy and so the people also must be holy. To support his claim that Jesus was holy he quotes Leviticus 11 & 19.

Let us see if Leviticus 11 & 19 say that Jesus or for that matter the messiah would be holy.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

1 Peter 1:16 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Leviticus 11:44 For I am the Lord your God, and you shall sanctify yourselves and be holy, because I am holy, and you shall not defile yourselves through any creeping creature that crawls on the ground.

Leviticus 19:2 Speak to the entire congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them, You shall be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy.
  • Leviticus 11 and 19 G-d is saying that Israel must be holy as G-d is holy.
  • There is no mention of the messiah in these passages for Peter to have misunderstood that Moses was writing about the messiah being holy.
  • I think this is what leads Christians into trouble with they read their bible with their Jesus glasses on.
  • In Mark 10:18 Jesus tells the rich man that only G-d is good. He does not call himself good, leave alone holy.
  • So why does Peter think that Jesus was holy.
Mark 10:18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good except God alone.
