Did David prophecy that Matthias will replace Judas ~ Cross reference of Acts 1:20 to Psalm 109:8

I found Acts 15-20 very interesting, because
  • The whole event that "Judas had to betray Jesus" so he can die for the sins of anyone who believes in him and that this was prophesied by David 1700 years ago is quite difficult to digest.
  • Another inconsistency is that the "field of blood" was bought by Judas as per Luke and as per Matthew, the priests bought it.
  • Luke then cherry picks 2 passages from Psalm 109 & 69 to say that David prophesied that someone else should take his place.
  • Does prophecy in Tanakh work like this? I don't think so.
Even if it were as per the Greek text, let us read Psalm 69 & 109 in context to see if all this is true.

All Greek Text references are from NIV and Tanakh references are from Chabad.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Acts 1:15 In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) 16 and said, “Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. 17 He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.” 18 (With the payment he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. 19 Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
20 “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms: “‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and, “‘May another take his place of leadership.’

Psalm 69:25 May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents.

Psalm 109:8 May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership.

Psalm 69
  • Psalm 69 is written by David [Verse 1]
  • David is calling out to G-d that he is in trouble because of his enemies and he does not feel G-d cares about him
  • He says even though his enemies wish he destruction he will trust in G-d who has been kind to him.
  • From verse 23-29 he asks G-d to punish his enemies.
  • Where do you see anything about Judas, Jesus, betrayal, crucifixion, field, falling, intestines?
Psalm 109
  • Psalm 109 is written by David [Verse 1]
  • Verses 2-5 talk about how David's enemies are troubling him. This is not about 1 person who is troubling David [clue... count the number of time "they" is used]
  • Verses 6-20 David asks G-d to punish his enemies with very creative punishments.
  • All verse 8 is saying is that may the wicked man's office be taken by someone else.
  • Here again I don't see anything about betrayal, crucifixion
