Did prophecy return on day of Pentecost? ~ Cross reference of Acts 2:14 to Joel 3:1

Peter was meant to be the rock [foundation] of Jesus's church and in the first few chapters of Acts you see him do just that. He is boldly standing up for Jesus and telling people how Jesus died for their sins. After the Cornelius event, Peter goes into oblivion and the Church of Jesus was lead by Paul. Wonder who changed the plan?

This event is on the day of Pentecost where the 120 odd people in an upper room were praying and the holy spirit came down as tongues of fire and all these started speaking in different languages that Jesus died for people sins and anyone who believes in him will be saved from hell.

Peter then quotes Joel 3 to say this was expected as at the end of times, this was to happen as prophesied by Joel.

Let us examine Joel 3 to see if this is true.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Acts 2:14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17 “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. 18 Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy. 19 I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. 20 The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord. 21 And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’

Joel 3:1 And it shall come to pass afterwards that I will pour out My spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy; your elders shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. 2 And even upon the slaves and the maidservants in those days will I pour out My spirit. 3 And I will perform signs in the heavens and on the earth: Blood, fire, and pillars of smoke. 4 The sun shall turn to darkness, and the moon to blood, prior to the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. 5 And it shall come to pass that whoever shall call in the name of the Lord shall be delivered, for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be a deliverance, as the Lord said, and among the survivors whom the Lord invites.
  • Joel was a prophet during the time of King Jehoash[Judah - Southern Kingdom]. This was a period where the people were moving away from the ways of G-d. You see in chapter 1 about different kinds of locusts [symbolism of various kingdoms] that would attack if they do not mend their ways.
  • Joel 1 you see G-d telling the people of Judah what these nations will do the land, temple and people. G-d say the people should fast, repent and return to him
  • Joel 2 is saying that we need to trust in the Almighty G-d to be delivered from his wrath that will come at the end of days.
  • Joel 3 G-d gives the promise of redemption from these enemies if they repent and turn to G-D.
  • The passage that Peter quotes it about the ONE TRUE G-D of the universe saying that anyone who turns to G-D will be delivered from the enemy not that their sins will be washed away. Clearly this is not talking about Jesus.
  • Joel talks about G-d’s spirit being poured out on all flesh not just Jesus’s disciples.
  • Did any of the signs that Joel talks about in verse 3-4 happen when what happened in Acts 2 happened?
  • As per verse 5 deliverance will come, if you see acts the Romans were hunting the disciples and they were hiding from the Romans. No deliverance came for Jesus’s disciples, they were hunted down and killed and the rest ran away from Jerusalem.
  • Christians can claim that these persecutions were planned by Jesus / god so that the gospel can be preached to the entire world. But then they must agree that Joel does not say anything about going out to all the world and preaching about G-d.
