Is Isaiah 42 about Jesus? ~ Cross Reference of Matthew 12:15 to Isaiah 42:1

In Matthew 12:15 Jesus heals a crowd of people and then tells than not to tell anyone about him. Matthew cross references Isaiah 42:1 to say that Jesus fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 42:2 when he told people not to tell anyone about him.

I think Isaiah 42:1 says that his voice will not be heard outside. This is not the same as Jesus teaching and healing people and then telling them not to tell anyone about him.

Let us examine what Isaiah 42 is about and decide if it is about Jesus or not.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Matthew 12:15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. A large crowd followed him, and he healed all who were ill. 16 He warned them not to tell others about him. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 18 “Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he has brought justice through to victory.21 In his name the nations will put their hope.”[b]

Isaiah 42:1 Behold My servant, I will support him, My chosen one, whom My soul desires; I have placed My spirit upon him, he shall promulgate justice to the nations. 2 He shall neither cry nor shall he raise [his voice]; and he shall not make his voice heard outside. 3 A breaking reed he shall not break; and a flickering flaxen wick he shall not quench; with truth shall he execute justice. 4 Neither shall he weaken nor shall he be broken, until he establishes justice in the land, and for his instruction, islands shall long.

Isaiah has 4 servant songs in Isaiah 42:1–4; Isaiah 49:1–6; Isaiah 50:4–7; and Isaiah 52:13–53:12. Except in Isaiah 52-53, the other 3 have clear markers that shows that G-d is talking about the nation of Israel or the remnant of Israel that has been faithful to G-d.

Christians for centuries have been using Isaiah 52:13-53:12 as the "suffering servant" to say that Isaiah prophesied that Jesus will come to the earth and die for the sins of the world.

Read each of the verses quoted below and see why Matthew using Isaiah 42 is a disaster.

Isaiah 42:2 He shall neither cry nor shall he raise [his voice]; and he shall not make his voice heard outside.
  • Jesus cried in the garden of Gethsemane the night before his crucifixion, he cried to his father from the cross.
  • Jesus preached all over Israel and people thronged to hear him. Surely his voice was heard in the streets.
  • In John 7:37 Jesus stands up shouts loudly that whoever is thirsty let him come to me ...
Isaiah 42:3 A breaking reed he shall not break; and a flickering flaxen wick he shall not quench; with truth shall he execute justice.
  • Ask the poor fig tree it will tell you what Jesus did to it unjustly. Matthew 21:18
Isaiah 42:4 Neither shall he weaken nor shall he be broken, until he establishes justice in the land, and for his instruction, islands shall long.
  • Just the opposite of everything that is stated in verse 4 happened to Jesus. He was killed.
Isaiah 42:19 Who is blind but My servant, and deaf as My messenger whom I will send? He who was blind is as the one who received his payment, and he who was blind is as the servant of the Lord.
  • Do Christians after reading about the servant in Isaiah 42 think it is about Jesus. According to them Jesus was the son of god so how do they explain verse 19?
The servant in Isaiah 42 is the nation of Israel and if you read it in context you will see the TRUTH.
