Why was Peter so upset that people were rejecting his teachings ~ Cross reference of 2 Peter 2:20 to Proverbs 26:11

Peter seems to be facing opposition from some people and he spends a lot of ink to describe how evil these people are. He does not name anyone but I suspect these were the the Jews who would not accept his claim about the dead and risen messiah.

This is quite acceptable as any educated Jew knows that the messiah will be a human & will fear G-d. This messiah will be made the king of Israel by G-d. He will come at a time when there is world peace and everyone knows about the ONE TRUE G-D of the universe.

Will let you read 2 Peter 2 and let me know if you agree / disagree that Peter is talking about these 2 groups of people
  • The Jews who did not accept Peter's teachings.
  • The Jews who at first believed what Peter was saying and when the first group talked to them about the messiah in Tanakh, they wanted to reject Peter's teaching. This group, Peter addresses as "dogs going back to their vomit"
Solomon is talking about foolish people in general and what will happen to them. But it will be good to examine why people who believed Peter initially were now rejecting his teachings.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

2 Peter 2:20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. 21 It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. 22 Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”

Proverbs 26:11 As a dog returns to his vomit, so does a fool repeat his folly.

  • Solomon is talking about fools in general and how they live their lives. Peter has a right to use the passage that talks about fools being like dogs that return to their vomit to make his point that people who once came to the faith are abandoning it.
  • Not trying to split hairs here but, Solomon is talking about a fool repeating his mistake over and over. It is quite alright for Peter to use this passage to say, the believers where returning to the sinful life they were living before they came to know about Jesus. I guess the more important points to examine are
  • Why were the people that believed in Peter now abandoning the faith?
    • I think Peter's audience were uneducated people like himself and he was able to preach the "good news" to them and convince them that Jesus will come back any day now and restore Israel. Remember just before Jesus "ascends" into heaven his disciples are asking him about the end and when he will restore Israel.
    • The people after waiting decades are not seeing any sign of Jesus and start to think if Peter lied.
  • If the group of "Jew" were as bad as Peter says, do you think they would care about who believed who? They would be out in the streets doing all the things Peter accuses them of.
  • Peter calls the first group "false prophets", "people with depraved conduct", "People who follow corrupt desire of the flesh, "despisers of authority", "Bold & arrogant", "abusers of celestial beings", "blasphemers of things they do not know", "unreasoning animals" "creatures of instinct", "drunkards" "ogre indulgers", "lustful", "seducers of unstable", "experts in greed", " accursed brood", "idolaters" "springs without water", "mists driven by storms", "slaves of depravity"
  • Wow! So much anger coming from the "the rock" of Jesus's church against people who did not agree with him?
  • Peter had the right to scream out at "the Jews", because this movement died in a couple decades while the religion Paul preached thrived among gentiles and pagans who were worshipping sticks, stones, men, planets & animals.
  • I see this very temperament in Christians these days. Just try opposing their belief, you will get exactly this kind of language and also a lot more curses that you will go to hell. Of course there are some nice people who offer to pray for you so you see "the truth"
