Should Jesus not be a descendent of David to qualify as the messiah? ~ Cross reference of Luke 20:41 to Psalm 110:1
This is an interesting passage where Jesus quotes [or at least Luke makes him quote] Psalm 110:1 to show that David called Jesus lord. Basis this verse Jesus questions the people why they call him the son of David when David himself in spirit called him lord.
I see a contradiction in the Greek texts where on one hand Matthew & Luke waste a lot of ink to prove that Jesus is the promised messiah born in the line of David. Of course, they mess it up by saying that Jesus had no earthly father and was born of a virgin. Luke even gets the promise wrong by tracing his genealogy through Nathan when the promise G-d made was through the David and Solomon.
So is this passage a way to fix the genealogy issue by claiming that Jesus is greater than David so there is no need for Jesus to be from the line of David.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.
My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.
G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.
Luke 20:41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David? 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms: “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand 43 until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’[c] 44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”
Psalm 110:1 Of David a psalm. The word of the Lord to my master; "Wait for My right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool at your feet."
- G-d made a promise to David and Solomon and there is no going back on the promise. You see that till Zedekiah who was the last king of Judah, every king has been from the line of David.[Athaliah mother of Ahaziah was an exception who killed all the sons of her son and ruled for 6 years. She was then killed and Jehoash was made king]
- We await the messianic age when the messiah from the line of David will rule Israel and the whole world will worship the ONE TRUE G-D of the universe.
- Tanakh talks about the messiah being a human being who will rule as king. If you ask if Solomon was greater than David, you can say in some ways he was. He was wiser, wealthier & achieved more than his father David. This does not make him any less a descendent of David. We all wish and pray that our children will become greater than us.
- How can Jesus be a human. Christians consider him a son of god or even god.
- This is a Psalm written by David. If you read Psalm 110 you will see why David did not call Jesus lord. Unless you read Jesus into this Psalm, this Psalm is about David and G-d.
- David is saying that his G-d told him to sit at G-d's right hand until G-d makes his enemies his footstool.
- The second lord used in this verse is Adoni which means a human master and not any heavenly being. I have seen some versions of the Greek text put the Tetragrammaton in both the first and second lord which is very wrong.
- All these points show that this passage does not support Matthew's assertion of Jesus's place at the right hand of god was established in Tanakh.
- All the below verses use the word Adoni which refers to a human being.
- Genesis 24:34
- Genesis 32:5, 6, 19
- Genesis 33:8, 12, 14, 15
- 1 Sam 24:8
- 1 Kings 1:2, 17Daniel 7
- All that said, let us see a few verses that clearly show why this Psalm is not about Jesus
- Verse 2 The staff of your might the Lord will send from Zion; rule in the midst of your enemies. - David ruled out of Zion from here David subdued all his enemies. Jesus never ruled anyone.
- Verse 5 The Lord, on your right hand, has crushed kings on the day of His wrath.- David crushed all his enemies and G-d gave him peace during his last days. Jesus was killed after 3 years of teaching and healing people
- Verse 6 He will execute justice upon the nations [into] a heap of corpses; He crushed the head on a great land. - David is considered a Just king who made sure there was justice in the land. Not sure what justice Jesus did when he was alive
