Why did John the dipper say he is not Elijah & why did Jesus say John the dipper is Elijah ~ Cross reference of Matthew 11:7 to Malachi 3:1
In John 1:21 John the dipper says that he is not Elijah while in Matthew 11 & Luke 7 Jesus says that John the dipper was indeed Elijah.
There are couple of passages in Tanakh that talk about a messenger that will come before the messianic age begins. Rabbis think this messenger will be Elijah who will return and help identify who the messiah is. The messianic age begins before the messiah arrives and this is the age when G-d will restore the earth to how it was intended to be.
The Greek texts use these passages to say that John the dipper was the messenger and make him identify Jesus as the messiah.
I see some issues here.
This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.
My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.
G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.
Matthew 11:7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is the one about whom it is written: “‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’[c] 11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been subjected to violence,[d] and violent people have been raiding it. 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear.
Malachi 3:1 Behold I send My angel, and he will clear a way before Me. And suddenly, the Lord Whom you seek will come to His Temple. And behold! The angel of the covenant, whom you desire, is coming, says the Lord of Hosts. 3 And he shall sit refining and purifying silver, and he shall purify the children of Levi. And he shall purge them as gold and as silver, and they shall be offering up an offering to the Lord with righteousness. 4 And then the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem shall be pleasant to the Lord, as in the days of old and former years.

- In Malachi 3:1 G-d is saying that he will come to his temple in Jerusalem suddenly and the angel that the people desire will also come.
- What has G-d coming have to do with Jesus? Are the Christians saying that Jesus = god? But by trinity definition are they not different persons?
- If you read verse 3 it is very clear that this angel will purify the Levites so they will be fit for making sacrifices to G-d in the temple again.
- Did John purify the Levites? The priests during Jesus’s time were corrupt to the core. So how can this be talking about John the dipper?
- If you read Malachi 3:4 is says that the offerings in the temple will be acceptable to G-d as they were in the days of old. We know that Jesus had to drive out the traders from the temple courts for making a business out of the offerings and the priests had their own business going on with regard to the sacrifices. How can Matthew say that Malachi 3 is fulfilled in John the dipper and Jesus?
