Did Paul suggest capital punishment? ~ Cross reference of 1 Corinthians 5:13 to Deuteronomy 13:5, Deuteronomy 17:7, Deuteronomy 19:19, Deuteronomy21:21, Deuteronomy22:21-24, Deuteronomy 24:7

Corinth had a goddess called Aphrodite who was their goddess of sexual love and beauty. In this chapter Paul is addressing sexual immorality within the church though the elders in Corinth were trying to push it under the carpet as it was an one off issue.

Paul comes down hard on them, because they were trying to protect the influential person who was involved in this sin. Wonder why he had to come down so hard on them given that Jesus died for them and once saves, saved for ever.

One question I have though is, are today's Christians free from sexual immorality? Will they go to heaven even if they sin because they believed in Jesus?

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

1 Corinthians 5:13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.”

Deuteronomy 13:6 And that prophet, or that dreamer of a dream shall be put to death; because he spoke falsehood about the Lord, your God Who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and Who redeemed you from the house of bondage, to lead you astray from the way in which the Lord, your God, commanded you to go; so shall you clear away the evil from your midst.

Deuteronomy 17:7 The hand of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people, and you shall abolish evil from among you.

Deuteronomy 19:19 then you shall do to him as he plotted to do to his brother, and you shall [thus] abolish evil from among you.

Deuteronomy 21:21 And all the men of his city shall pelt him to death with stones, and he shall die. So shall you clear out the evil from among you, and all Israel will listen and fear.

Deuteronomy 22:24 you shall take them both out to the gate of that city, and you shall pelt them with stones, and they shall die: the girl, because she did not cry out [even though she was] in the city, and the man, because he violated his neighbor's wife. So shall you clear away the evil from among you.

Deuteronomy 24:7 If a man is discovered kidnapping any person from among his brothers, of the children of Israel, and treats him as a slave and sells him that thief shall die, so that you shall clear out the evil from among you.
  • Paul takes offense that the elders in Corinth are protecting this person who has been involved in incest because of he was an influential person in the church.
  • But the approach he takes to serve justice is by the elders getting together and get rid of him from the church
  • What is strange is he says he will be with them in spirit and this group will remove the spiritual protection from him so that Satan can take control of him.
  • This almost seems like some kind of exorcism being done to the person so that his soul will end up in hell.
  • The reason he says this should be done is, so that he repents and changes.
  • Should they not be like Jesus who said love your enemies and coach him and make him repent.
  • Paul then says this is the right thing to do as this is like leaven that will spoil the rest of the church. He quotes multiple instances of capital punishment from Deuteronomy.
  • Not much more to add but Deuteronomy is about physical death and there is no handing the person to Satan. Also the capital punishment is decided by the Sanhedrin and not any group of people.
