Did G-d say Abraham was righteous because of his faith only? ~ Cross reference of Galatians 3:5 to Genesis 15:6
Paul insists that the Galatians were being fooled that they can be saved by works [obeying the law]. I believe Paul's teachings were being challenged that believing that Jesus died for their sins alone was not enough.
Paul quotes Genesis 15:6 to prove that Abraham was not saved by works but by faith alone. He says that Christians are children of Abraham as they also have faith in Jesus and not because of their works.
I never could understand this cross reference because, Abraham believed in G-d's promise for sure, but G-d says he will bless Abraham because of his obedienceto G-d's commandments.
What also intrigues me is that Abraham believed that G-d will give him dependents and the land of Cannan to his dependents. There was no agreement between Abraham and G-d about eternity or salvation.
I will quote passages where G-d clearly says, he will bless Abraham because of his works and faith not just his faith.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.
G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.
Galatians 3:6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
Gen. 15:6 And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him as righteousness.
Galatians 3:6 So also Abraham “believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
Gen. 15:6 And he believed in the Lord, and He accounted it to him as righteousness.
- Kind of sad that Paul builds his religion based on faith and not works using this one passage in Genesis where it says "Abraham believed in G-d and G-d accounted it to him as righteousness".
- Paul latches onto this passage to say that Abraham was counted as righteous because he had faith in G-d's promise that he will be given children and land. That is not the same faith that Christians have right? They believe that if they have faith in Jesus all their sins will be forgiven and they will go to heaven. Where is the similarity in what Abraham believed in G-d for and what Christians believe in Jesus for?
- That said, if you read verse 8 you will see that Abraham 2 seconds later asks for proof from G-d. He does not blindly accept G-d's promise. How is that same as what Christians believe?
- Genesis 15:8 And he said, "O Lord God, how will I know that I will inherit it?"
- See some of the passages that show why G-d says he will bless Abraham and decide if faith alone got Abraham his blessings or his actions / works.
- Genesis 17:17 Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, “Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?” - Abraham laughs at G-d's promise. That is not faith but doubt.
- Genesis 18:6 And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make you into nations, and kings will emerge from you. 7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and between you and between your seed after you throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant, to be to you for a God and to your seed after you. 8 And I will give you and your seed after you the land of your sojourning, the entire land of Canaan for an everlasting possession, and I will be to them for a God." 9 And God said to Abraham, "And you shall keep My covenant, you and your seed after you throughout their generations. - This passage is about circumcision of males.
- Genesis 18:17 And the Lord said, "Shall I conceal from Abraham what I am doing? 18 And Abraham will become a great and powerful nation, and all the nations of the world will be blessed in him. 19 For I have known him because he commands his sons and his household after him, that they should keep the way of the Lord to perform righteousness and justice, in order that the Lord bring upon Abraham that which He spoke concerning him."
- Genesis 22:15 And an angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven. 16 And he said, "By Myself have I sworn, says the Lord, that because you have done this thing and you did not withhold your son, your only one, 17 That I will surely bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand that is on the seashore, and your descendants will inherit the cities of their enemies. 18 And through your children shall be blessed all the nations of the world, because you hearkened to My voice." - G-d promises to bless Abraham bacause he was willing to sacrifice Isaac.
- Genesis 26:3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you, and I will bless you, for to you and to your seed will I give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham, your father. 4 And I will multiply your seed like the stars of the heavens, and I will give your seed all these lands, and all the nations of the earth will bless themselves by your seed, 5 Because Abraham hearkened to My voice, and kept My charge, My commandments, My statutes, and My instructions." - G-d's promise to Isaac.
