Who is the prophet like Moses? ~ Cross reference of Acts 3:22 to Deuteronomy 18:18
Peter is addressing the Jews in Jerusalem. He says that due to ignorance they and their leaders could not understand that Jesus was the long awaited messiah. A few weeks before, he was rebuking Jesus for saying that he will have to go to Jerusalem and die. After Jesus role from the grave, he was asking when he will come band to redeem Israel. Why this transformation in belief of what the messiah was supposed to do?
In verse 19 Peter says repent and turn to god so your sins are forgiven and then god will send the messiah who is Jesus. [I think he was referring to what Jesus told the disciples that very soon he will come riding on the clouds.]
Wonder why Peter says, "repent and turn to god and your sins will be forgiven" and not "believe in Jesus and your sins will be forgiven".
Then Peter quotes Deuteronomy 18 to prove that Moses prophesied that god will send Jesus who would be the prophet like him.
Then Peter quotes Deuteronomy 18 to prove that Moses prophesied that god will send Jesus who would be the prophet like him.
Let us see if Moses prophesied about Jesus 2000 years before Jesus was born.

Acts 3:17 “Now, fellow Israelites, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. 18 But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the prophets, saying that his Messiah would suffer. 19 Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, 20 and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus. 21 Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. 22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you. 23 Anyone who does not listen to him will be completely cut off from their people.’
Deuteronomy 18:15 A prophet from among you, from your brothers, like me, the Lord, your God will set up for you; you shall hearken to him.
Deuteronomy 18:18 I will set up a prophet for them from among their brothers like you, and I will put My words into his mouth, and he will speak to them all that I command him. 19And it will be, that whoever does not hearken to My words that he speaks in My name, I will exact [it] of him.

- Deuteronomy is the last of the 5 books that Moses wrote. These form the Torah also known as teachings.
- This book is written in a short span of time, and Moses recapitulates all that Israel has gone through in the last 40 years.
- Israel has come to the edge of the promised land and Moses telling the people that he is not allowed to enter the land because he disobeyed G-d. He tells the people that the land they are about to enter id full of idolaters. He is telling them that they should not follow their path.
- He then tells them that they are not going to be left alone but that G-d will select from the people one leader who will lead them and the people should listen to him like they listened to Moses till now.
- We know from Deuteronomy that after Moses died, G-d appointed Joshua and he led the people into the land and conquered the nations and gave the land to Israel.
- If you see the verse 14 it is clear that Moses is warning them that once they are in the land they should test anyone who calls himself a prophet of G-d. Moses also assured them that they will have prophets to lead them and that is exactly what G-d did by raising up judges for them. Why would this be about Jesus who came after 3700 years?
