Israel is referred to in Singular - Key Passages

There are several passages where Tanakh uses "singular nouns" for Israel, Jacob, a tribe of Israel as individual and sometimes even to a gentile.

This is a style of Hebrew writing and should not mistake as grammatical errors or attribute the passage to one person like Jesus.

This is a partial list that have this style of addressing Israel in singular.



Exodus 4:22 And you shall say to Pharaoh, 'So said the Lord, "My firstborn son is Israel." ' 23 So I say to you, 'Send out My son so that he will worship Me, but if you refuse to send him out, behold, I am going to slay your firstborn son.' "

Isaiah 27:9 By this, then, will Jacob’s guilt be atoned for, and this will be the full fruit of the removal of his sin: When he makes all the altar stones to be like limestone crushed to pieces, no Asherah poles or incense altars will be left standing.
