Apocalypse ~ Cross reference of Matthew 24:29 to Isaiah 13:9 & Isaiah 34:4
He then says in verse 30 that, suddenly he will come with power and great glory and the elect will be gathered. I think this is what Christians call "rapture".
He uses Isaiah 13:9 & Isaiah 34:4 to say that this "dreadful day of Jesus" was prophesied by Isaiah.
Let us see if Isaiah was talking about Jesus's second coming and and rapture.

All Greek Text references are from NIV and Tanakh references are from Chabad.
My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.
G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.
Matthew 24:29 “Immediately after the distress of those days “‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’[b]
Isaiah 13:9 Behold, the day of the Lord is coming, cruel with wrath and burning anger, to make the land desolate, and its sinners He shall destroy from it. 10 For the stars of the heavens and its constellations shall not allow their light to illuminate, the sun has become dark in its going forth, and the moon shall not shine its light. 11 And I will visit evil upon the earth, and upon the wicked their iniquity; and I will cut off the pride of the presumptuous, and the arrogance of the tyrants I will humble.
Isaiah 34:4 And all the host of heaven shall melt, and the heavens shall be rolled like a scroll, and all their host shall wither as a leaf withers from a vine, and as a withered [fig] from a fig tree.
Isaiah 13
- If one does not nosedive into Isaiah 13:9 but takes a few minutes to start with verse 1 they will see that Isaiah was not talking about the "second coming of Jesus" but talks what G-d planned to do to Babylon. All this has happened and it is evident in the destruction of Babylon in 374 BCE.
- Isaiah 13:1 The harsh prophecy of Babylon which Isaiah son of Amoz prophesied.
- In verse 3 G-d says, I commanded my prepared ones who are Persia[Cyrus] and Media[Darius] to raise up against Babylon. You can read about this in several places in Tanakh [2 Chronicles 36:20-23, Daniel 5:25-26]
- In verses 4-16 G-d describes how the destruction of Babylon will happen.
- If you read verse 17 it is clear as day, where G-d says that he will raise Darius the Mede who will take over Babylon.
- Verse 19 is clear as a bright sunny day where G-d says, that the glory of Babylon will be like Sodom and Gomorrah.
- In all this, where do you see a prophecy about Jesus's second coming?
- Matthew picks verses 9 & 10 and uses them out of context to say that Isaiah was talking about Jesus's second coming.
- Here Isaiah is prophesying against the pagan nations for all their sins.
- This can be applied to Jesus's second coming for sure as it has not happened yet.
- Only issue is that it is the Tetragrammaton who is speaking here who Christians refer to as the father. So how can this be about Jesus?
Isaiah 13:3 I commanded My prepared ones; I summoned My heroes to [execute] My wrath, those who rejoice in My pride.
Isaiah 13:9 Behold, the day of the Lord is coming, cruel with wrath and burning anger, to make the land desolate, and its sinners He shall destroy from it.
Isaiah 13:19 And Babylon, the beauty of the kingdoms, the glory of the pride of the Chaldees, shall be like God's overturning of Sodom and Gemorrah.
Daniel 5:25 “This is the inscription that was written: mene, mene, tekel, parsin 26 “Here is what these words mean: Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. 27 Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. 28 Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.”
2 Chronicles 36:20 He carried into exile to Babylon the remnant, who escaped from the sword, and they became servants to him and his successors until the kingdom of Persia came to power. 21 The land enjoyed its sabbath rests; all the time of its desolation it rested, until the seventy years were completed in fulfillment of the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah. 22 In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah, the Lord moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing: 23 “This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: “‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Any of his people among you may go up, and may the Lord their God be with them.’”
