Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? ~ Cross reference of Mark 15:33 to Psalm 22:1
There are three ways to look at this.
- David prophesied that 1700 years later Jesus will be crucified and these words will be shouted out by Jesus.
- The church fathers in 80 CE after waiting for 50 years for Jesus's return, looked for texts in Tanakh and put these words into Jesus's mouth to justify that Jesus was not killed by Romans but the Romans had no choice but to kill Jesus because it was G-d's plan to save us from sins and even David prophesied about it.
- It was a coincidence that Jesus and David said the same words for each of their situations.
Christians believe Option #1 is correct. Let us see if this is the case.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.
My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.
G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.
Mark 15:33 At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. 34 And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[b]
Psalm 22:1 For the conductor, on the ayeleth hashachar, a song of David. 2 My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? [You are] far from my salvation [and] from the words of my moaning.
- Psalm 22 is written by David for conductor on the ayeleth hashachar[doe of the dawn]
- David is calling out to G-d that he is in trouble and does not feel that G-d cares for him.
- In verse 3 David says he has been calling to G-d by day and night[this is a period of days and maybe even months] not Jesus shouting once on the cross before dying.
- Verse 7 David says he is a worm and not even worthy to be called a man. Jesus was the sinless "son of god".
- Verse 10 David says G-d has been his protector from him mothers womb, Jesus was eternal and was the creator of everything that has been created.
- Verses 22-23 David says, G-d will save him and he will tell of G-d's greatness to everyone. Jesus was not saved by G-d but died on the cross.Scholars think that Mark has Jesus shocked that he is being crucified and does not utter a word, Matthew makes him cry out because Jesus cannot understand why all this is happening, Luke has him calm and composed and fulfilling his purpose, John has him in control of his own death and resurrection.
- Isaiah 53 is the only passage in Tanakh that talks about "the servant" suffering for the people. Christians see this "servant" as Jesus.
- Isaiah 53 does not have any clear markers that these passages are talking about the messiah.
- There are 9 passages in Tanakh that talk about the messiah and they will have markers like "son of David", "ruling", "kingdom" "peace", "knowledge of G-d"...
- Did the Church fathers create this whole "suffering messiah who takes away the sins of the people" to explain why Jesus is not returning as promised?
- None of the disciples thought Jesus was the suffering servant of Isaiah 53..
- Read Matthew 16:22, Jesus calls Peter "Satan". If Peter believed in the 'suffering servant" should he not have said, "I know you have to die for our sins" instead he says "Never lord, this should not happen to you". Christians explain that only after the holy spirit came they understood things ...
- Read Acts 1:6, After his resurrection, the disciples ask him "will you now restore the kingdom to Israel" they should have said "Thank you Jesus, I don't care about these kingdom stuff, when will you take us to heaven?"
