This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.
My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.
G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.
Matthew 18:16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’[d] 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.
Deuteronomy 19:15 One witness shall not rise up against any person for any iniquity or for any sin, regarding any sin that he will sin. By the mouth of two witnesses, or by the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be confirmed. 16 If a false witness rises up against a man, to bear perverted testimony against him, 17 Then the two men between whom the controversy exists shall stand before the Lord, before the kohanim and the judges who will be in those days. 18 And the judges shall inquire thoroughly, and behold, the witness is a false witness; he has testified falsely against his brother;
Deuteronomy 19:15 One witness shall not rise up against any person for any iniquity or for any sin, regarding any sin that he will sin. By the mouth of two witnesses, or by the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be confirmed. 16 If a false witness rises up against a man, to bear perverted testimony against him, 17 Then the two men between whom the controversy exists shall stand before the Lord, before the kohanim and the judges who will be in those days. 18 And the judges shall inquire thoroughly, and behold, the witness is a false witness; he has testified falsely against his brother;
- The context of Matthew 18:15-17 is about a fellow believer sinning and another believer comes to know about it. Jesus is giving a 3 step process.
- Tell the person one-on-one not to sin. If this does not work
- Take 2-3 witnesses and try again. If this also does not work
- Take this up with the church elders
- Was the concept of a church there when Jesus was alive. I thought his followers were still Jewish and the synagogue was their place of worship and the Sanhedrin was the elders. Even in acts Peter, James and the Jerusalem believers gathered in the temple and offered prayers and sacrifices.
- Tanakh has no concept of one man judging another man's sin, with the help of 2 witnesses, the person who has sinned will be examined by the Kohanim & judges and they will decide what needs to be done.
- The concept of minimum 2 witnesses was given so a person does not falsely accuse a fell Jew out of spite.
