Who would have believed our report ~ Cross reference of John 12:37 to Isaiah 53:1

Isaiah 52:13 to Isaiah 53:12 are the go to passages for Christians to show that Jesus died according to the scriptures to save all those who believe in him.

What strikes me as odd is that none of the disciples believed in the dying messiah and you see this clearly when Peter rebukes Jesus for saying that he must die. Even after his "resurrection", they ask him when he will restore Israel and not when will you take us to heaven.

Gospels fix these issues by saying that after Jesus explained all these things to them after his resurrection they understood. But then you see all of them abandon the Jesus movement and go back to fishing.

Then in Acts you see the holy spirit coming and resting on them and then the Jesus bunch get into action. This does not last long and dies out in 2-3 decades. Paul who never met Jesus, turbo charges to form Christianity he claims is given by the "risen Jesus" and the whole law goes out of the window to be replaced by faith and grace.

Finally the Church fathers take Christianity into Trinity and Idolatry of worshipping the Mary & Disciples.

Now let us dive into Isaiah 52 and 53 to see why Isaiah is not talking about Israel not believing in Jesus but that the gentiles did not believe in the suffering of Israel.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

John 12:37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

[Chabad] Isaiah 52:15 So shall he cast down many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of him, for, what had not been told them they saw, and [at] what they had not heard they gazed. Isaiah 53:1 Who would have believed our report, and to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?

[NIV] Isaiah 52:15 so he will sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand. Isaiah 53:1 Who would have believed our report, and to whom was the arm of the Lord revealed?
  • First issue we have here is Isaiah 52-53 is not about anyone doing miracles so people can believe in this person.
  • To correctly understand these passages it is important to know who is speaking to who and then the what he is speaking will be understood correctly.
  • If you read verse 52:15 you will see that G-d is speaking through Isaiah that the servant will cast down the nations [gentiles] and then they will shut their mouths when they see what they had not been told, and what they had not heard they gazed at.
  • If you see the NIV version the Greek text has changed the word "cast down" to "sprinkle" which I have no clue what it means. I am guessing his blood will be sprinkled on the gentile and they will open their eyes to see that Jesus is the messiah.
  • The next verse Isaiah 53:1 the same gentile nations who shut their mouths, will that we did not believe till we were shown as stated in the previous verse.
  • The Hebrew scrolls do not have any paginations and the Greek text tries to break the verses in such a way that the nations stop speaking at Isaiah 52:15 and from Isaiah 53:1 onwards it is the nation of Israel speaking.
  • Even for argument sake let us agree to the above split, then the simple questions to ask is
    • Why will Jesus cast down nations ["sprinkle" - what ever that means] the nations
    • Why will they be shocked and shut their mouths?
