Why did Jesus need swords and money to die on the cross? ~ Cross reference of Luke 22:36 to Isaiah 53:9

I am lost on this cross reference. Jesus asks his disciples to take swords and cash and tells them to be prepared for what?
  • Fight the enemies with the words so Jesus is not crucified?
  • Use the money to pay off the enemies?
Then he makes it clear that none of the above are to happen but that he should die for the sins of all mankind that believe in him.

Luke in the NIV version quotes Isaiah 53 passages.

So setting aside my confusion, let us see why the passages quoted by Luke are not referring to Jesus.

All Greek Text references are from NIV and Tanakh references are from Chabad.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Luke 22:36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.” 38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.” “That’s enough!” he replied.

[Chabad] Isaiah 53:9 And he gave his grave to the wicked, and to the wealthy with his kinds of death, because he committed no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. 10 And the Lord wished to crush him, He made him ill; if his soul makes itself restitution, he shall see children, he shall prolong his days, and God's purpose shall prosper in his hand. 11 From the toil of his soul he would see, he would be satisfied; with his knowledge My servant would vindicate the just for many, and their iniquities he would bear. 12 Therefore, I will allot him a portion in public, and with the strong he shall share plunder, because he poured out his soul to death, and with transgressors he was counted; and he bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors.

[NIV] Isaiah 53:9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth. 10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand. 11 After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Let's look at verse by verse to see how these passages in Isaiah 53 are not talking about Jesus's crucifixion but about Israel.

Isaiah 53:9 And he gave his grave to the wicked, and to the wealthy with his kinds of death, because he committed no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
  • Jesus's grave was in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea who according to Matthew & John was a disciple of Jesus and according to Mark he was a member of the council[not sure which one though]
  • verse 9 talks about deaths [plural] not about Jesus dying in the cross. NIV has this in singular to say it is about Jesus.
  • The right understanding is that the Jews since their return from Babylon refused to bow down to idolatry even if it meant they had to go to the grave. This is what this verse is talking about.
Isaiah 53:10 And the Lord wished to crush him, He made him ill; if his soul makes itself restitution, he shall see children, he shall prolong his days, and God's purpose shall prosper in his hand.
  • Verse 10 says that G-d continued to punish him not kill the servant. This was intended for them to become righteous by observing the Torah. There is nothing about the servant dying or dying for others.
  • Christians translate this verse to say he died for the sins of others. They also translate the word "if" to "though" where it talks about the servant if he repents will have children and see long life.
  • Why and how does this passage apply to Jesus who according to Christians is god in flesh.
Isaiah 53:11 After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities.
  • This verse talks about the servant seeing light after his suffering. It also says by his knowledge he will justify many. The mission G-d gave Israel was to be a light to the nations. So they will have to bear the iniquities of the gentiles till they bring the whole world to accept the ONE TRUE G-d of the universe
  • Christians say that Jesus died to justify many by his blood. There is nothing about dying or blood in this verse as well.
Isaiah 53:12 Therefore, I will allot him a portion in public, and with the strong he shall share plunder, because he poured out his soul to death, and with transgressors he was counted; and he bore the sin of many, and interceded for the transgressors.
  • G-d says people counted Israel as a transgressor and bore the offenses of many and yet he did not complain but he interceded for his oppressors.
  • G-d says that because his servant Israel was willing to suffer for the gentiles so they finally come close to G-d, Israel will be blessed above all nations.
  • Christians claim that because Jesus died for all mankind who believe in him, god made him sit on him right hand.
