Why did Peter think Jesus was the cornerstone that "the Jews" rejected ~ Cross Reference of Acts 4:11 to Psalm 118:22

Peter & John where preaching the good news to the people in the temple courts and many were believing them. So the "Jews" got upset and put them in the temple jail because it was late in the evening to take them to the Sanhedrin.

Next day Peter and John were presented to the Sanhedrin. They ask Peter and John by what authority or in whose name they were preaching.

Peter is filled with the holy spirit and he boldly witnesses that he healed the lame person in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Let us see if Jesus was the cornerstone written about by David.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Acts 4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’

Psalm 118:21 I shall thank You because You answered me, and You were my salvation. 22 The stone that the builders rejected became a cornerstone. 23 This was from the Lord; it is wondrous in our eyes.

  • Let us first see the context of Psalm 118 and what this Psalm is about.
  • This is a Psalm where the author is not mentioned, but from the content and style we can assume this is written by David.
  • If you read verses 1-4 the author is talking about how kind G-d is.
  • In Verses 5-9 the author says he called out to G-d when in trouble and G-d answered him. He also says that he would trust in G-d rather than in man.
  • Verses 10-14 talks about the authors enemies and their desire to hurt him but how G-d helped him overcome his enemies.
  • Verses 15-29 talk about how the author wants to praise G-d for delivering him from his enemies and death.
  • Peter picked up verse 22 [verse 21 in the Greek Text] to say that this Psalm is talking about Jesus being the cornerstone that was rejected by the Jews.
  • Let's see some issues that say that Psalm 118 is not talking about Jesus.
    • Verse 6 says that man cannot harm this person in any way. - Jesus was killed by men.
    • Verse 7 says G-d will help him take revenge on his enemies. - Jesus never took revenge on his enemies but actually prayed for his enemies.
    • Verses 10-12 say many nations have surrounded him but he will destroy these nations. - No nations where against Jesus. Everyone loved him and he was a popular guy going around healing & feeding people.
    • Verse 17 the author says he will not die but live to tell people about the greatness of G-d. - Jesus died.
    • Verse 18 he says G-d has chastised him. - Why does Jesus need chastising, he was the sinless lamb of god that takes away sins of all people who believe in him.
  • All that said, David was rejected by his father who thought he was not worthy to be presented to Samuel, Saul rejected him even though he knew G-d anointed him as king, His wife rejected him because he danced when the ark was brought into Jerusalem, his son rejected his father and tried to take his throne. So logically the author says that though the world rejected him he has become the corner stone of Israel.
  • Another clue is the very previous verse [verse 21] where David says, [I shall thank You because You answered me, and You were my salvation]
  • This Psalm is talking about David who ruled for 40 years while Jesus was killed after a 3 years mission of teaching and healing people and never ruled anyone.
Psalm 118:6 The Lord is for me; I shall not fear. What can man do to me?

Psalm 118:7 The Lord is for me with my helpers, and I shall see [revenge] in my enemies.

Psalm 118:10 All nations surrounded me; in the name of the Lord that I shall cut them off. 11They encircled me, yea they surrounded me; in the name of the Lord that I shall cut them off. 12 They encircled me like bees; they were extinguished like a thorn fire; in the name of the Lord that I shall cut them off.

Psalm 118:17 I shall not die but I shall live and tell the deeds of God.

Psalm 118:18 God has chastised me, but He has not delivered me to death.
