Did David prophecy that god will declare Jesus as his son? ~ Cross reference of Hebrews 1:5 to Psalm 2:7, 2 Samuel 7:14, 1 Chronicles 17:13

We do not know who wrote Hebrews, but looks like it was a student of Paul as you see a lot of his theological influence on the author. This letter is addressed to the Jews and so is quite rich in cross references to Tanakh.

In this post we will cover if Psalm 2 is about god telling Jesus that today he has become the son of god.

What is funny is the Author of Hebrew does a card switch trick here by making the Psalm as if god wrote it when the Psalm is written by David[most likely] and he is talking about G-d. In verse 7 David says G-d to him.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Hebrews 1:5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”?

Psalm 2:7 I will tell of the decree; The Lord said to me, "You are My son; this day have I begotten you.

2 Samuel 7:14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to Me a son; so that when he goes astray I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of Adam.

1 Chronicles 17:13 I shall be to him as a father, and he will be to Me as a son, and I shall not remove My loving-kindness from him as I removed [it] from he who was before you.

Psalm 2
  • This Psalm most likely written about David. Though the author is not mentioned it makes sense based on the content of the Psalm.
  • All this Psalm is saying is that G-d has appointed his King on his holy mountain [Zion] and the gentile nations are trying to oppose him.
  • The writer says, G-d will destroy these nations and kings. That is what happened during David's reign. G-d placed David as the king of Israel and through him G-d defeated all the nations around him to the point that no king raised against David during his time and also through Solomon's reign.
  • In context this is a Psalm that applies to David than to Jesus who never ruled, had a throne or defeated any nations.
  • Do read some of these passages to see if this could be about David or Jesus.
  • Psalm 2:1 Why have nations gathered and [why do] kingdoms think vain things? 2 Kings of a land stand up, and nobles take counsel together against the Lord and against His anointed? - There were no kings who opposed Jesus. At best the Pharisees challenged his claims of being the messiah.
  • Psalm 2:6 "But I have enthroned My king on Zion, My holy mount." - David is saying about himself probably that G-d has placed him in Zion as the king of Israel. Jesus did not have this position. All he did was teach.
  • Psalm 2:7 I will tell of the decree; The Lord said to me, "You are My son; this day have I begotten you. - Christians claim he is god and is eternal. How can this passage refer to Jesus?
  • Psalm 2:8 Request of Me, and I will make nations your inheritance, and the ends of the earth your possession. - If Jesus is god, why does he need to ask god for anything?
2 Samuel 7
  • If you read this chapter in context, you will see that it is talking about David feeling a desire to build G-d's temple. He sees that he has a home, but G-'d covenant arc is lying in a tent.
  • G-d tells him through the prophet Nathan that David will not build the temple but his son will build it.
  • This is exactly what happened, Solomon built the first temple in Jerusalem and this prophecy is fulfilled.
  • Also how can Jesus make a mistake and be chastised with the rod of men. Christians believe that Jesus was sinless lamb of god right?
1 Chronicles 17
  • This is a repeat of the same event in 2 Samuel 7 so not going to repeat the same conclusion
  • Only point to mention here is notice that verse 13 clearly says, Like G-d removed Saul[from the tribe of Benjamin] who was before David, G-d is saying that David's line will continue for ever.
