Did Israel suffer persecution, famine, nakedness, & sword for Jesus 1700 years before Jesus was born? ~ Cross reference of Romans 8:36 to Psalm 44:23
Kind of pointless to say Psalm 44 is about Christians, but will call out a few points to show that this Psalm is Israel suffering because of their enemies.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.
My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.
G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.
Romans 8:31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[j]
Psalm 44:21 If we forgot the name of our God and spread out our palms to a strange god, 22 Will God not search this out? For He knows the secrets of the heart. 23 For it is for Your sake that we are killed all the time, [that] we are considered as sheep for the slaughter. 24 Awaken! Why should You sleep, O Lord? Arouse Yourself, forsake not forever. 25 Why do You hide Your countenance? [Why do] You forget our affliction and oppression? 26 For our soul is cast down to the dust, our belly clings to the earth. 27 Arise to assist us and redeem us for the sake of Your kindness.

- This is a Psalm written by the sons of Korah and is divided into three parts. From verse 1-9 it is talking about how G-d did wonders and saved their ancestors from trouble. It also talks about how G-d gave them victory over their enemies.
- Psalm 44:2 O God, with our ears we heard, our forefathers told us; You performed a deed in their days, in days of old. 3 You-[with] Your hand You drove out nations and planted them; You inflicted harm on kingdoms and sent them away. 4 For not by their sword did they inherit the land, neither did their arm save them, but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your countenance, for You favored them. 7 For I do not trust in my bow, neither will my sword save me. 8 For You saved us from our adversaries and You put our enemies to shame.
- From verse 10-17 the author is calling out to G-d about their current state where their enemies are plundering them and they are living in fear and shame.
- Psalm 44:10 Even if You have forsaken us and put us to shame, and You do not go out in our hosts; 11 You make us retreat from the adversary, and our enemies plunder for themselves; 12 You deliver us as sheep to be eaten, and You scatter us among the nations. 13 You sell Your people without gain, and You did not increase their price; 14 You make us a reproach to our neighbors, a scorn and a derision to those around us; 15 You make us a byword among the nations, a [cause for] shaking the head among the kingdoms.
- The third part is about how despite the fear and shame they look to G-d for their deliverance and they call out to G-d to come and help them.
- Psalm 44:18 All this has befallen us and we have not forgotten You, neither have we betrayed Your covenant. 19 Our heart has not turned back, nor have our steps turned away from Your path 21 If we forgot the name of our God and spread out our palms to a strange god 27 Arise to assist us and redeem us for the sake of Your kindness.
- Where in these passages do you see anything about Jesus, Paul, Christians?
