Did Isaiah prophesy that only a remnant Jews will go to heaven? ~ Cross reference of Romans 9:27 to Isaiah 10:20, Isaiah 1:2

"Salvation", Save", "Savior" in Tanakh ALWAYS means rescue from current physical & political danger. There are probably 3-4 passages that talk about life after death / hell. So you must understand that when Tanakh says savior, it means a person, group of people who will rescue a person or group of people from physical harm.

The Greek text uses the same set of words but always mean, rescue from sins, life after death, heaven, hell. In this case Paul uses the word "saved" in the Greek text sense when the quoted passages in Isaiah 10 are about Assyria attacking Israel [10 Northern tribes] because they were exploiting the poor and needy.

So Paul twists what the passages are talking about and says, that because Israel followed the law they failed while the gentiles who believed in Jesus have been saved.

Let us examine each of the Passages that Paul quotes in context to see if what Paul claims about gentiles is true.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Romans 9:27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved. 28 For the Lord will carry out his sentence on earth with speed and finality. 29 It is just as Isaiah said previously: “Unless the Lord Almighty had left us descendants, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah.”[l] 30 What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. 32 Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone. 33 As it is written:
“See, I lay in Zion a stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall, and the one who believes in him will never be put to shame.”[m]

Isaiah 10:20 And it shall come to pass that on that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob shall not continue to lean on him that smote them; but he shall lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. 21 The remnant shall return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22 For if your people Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, the remnant of them that shall return, shall wash away with righteousness the decreed destruction. 23 For destruction and annihilation the Lord God of Hosts performs in the midst of all the land. 24 Therefore, so said the Lord God of Hosts, "Fear not, my people who dwell in Zion, Assyria; with a rod may he smite you, and his staff may he bear over you in the way of Egypt."

Isaiah 1:9 "Had not the Lord of Hosts left us a remnant, we would soon be like Sodom; we would resemble Gomorrah."

Isaiah 28:16 Therefore, so has the Lord God said: "Behold, I have laid as a foundation a stone in Zion, a fortress stone, a costly cornerstone, a foundation well founded; the believer shall not hasten.

Isaiah 10
  • Isaiah 10 is about the downfall of Israel[10 northern tribes] and the evil that they had been doing.
    • Isaiah 10:1 Woe to those who engrave engravings of injustice and missives of perverseness they write. 2 To pervert the judgment of the impoverished and to rob the judgment of the poor of My people, so that the widows are their plunder, and they pillage the orphans.
  • G-d then says he will use Assyria to punish Israel.
    • Isaiah 10:5 Woe that Assyria is the rod of My wrath, and My fury is a staff in their hand[s]. 6 Against a hypocritical nation I will incite them, and upon the people of My anger will I command them, to plunder and to spoil spoils, and to make it trodden down like the mud of the streets.
  • But Assyria will not think that G-d allowed this victory but that he achieved it on his own might and then he will attack Judah [2 Northern tribes]
    • Isaiah 10:7 But he does not deem it so, and his heart does not think so, but to destroy is in his heart, and to cut off nations, not a few. 11 Indeed, as I did to Samaria and to her idols, so will I do to Jerusalem and to her idols." 13 For he said, "With the strength of my hand I accomplished it, and with my wisdom, for I am clever, and I remove the boundaries of peoples, and their positions have I plundered, and I lowered many inhabitants.
  • After Assyria takes Israel into exile, he will return to do the same to Judah. This is the attack when Hezekiah was King of Judah, when 185,000 Assyrian soldiers were killed by an Angel in one night.[Read 2 Kings 19:35]
  • At that time a remnant of righteous people of Israel and the nation of Israel will turn to G-d and G-d will show his redemption to Judah by killing the entire Assyrian Army just he did for Gideon when he went against the Medians. [Read Judges 7:25]
    • Isaiah 10:26 And the Lord of Hosts shall stir up a scourge against him, like the smiting of Midian at the Rock of Oreb, and His staff on the sea, and He shall carry him off after the manner of Egypt.
  • This is a fulfilled prophecy and has nothing to do with gentiles being saved by the blood of Jesus.
Isaiah 1
  • This chapter is placed as the first chapter though Isaiah 6 is the actual beginning of Isaiah's prophesies because this has a wonderful promise that G-d makes to Israel in verses 16-18. Isaiah chapters 1-40 have very harsh admonishes for Israel because that moved away from the way of G-d's laws.
  • Isaiah compares G-d's people with donkey & ox and say that these animals are better that they return to their crib but Israel has rebelled against G-d.
    • Isaiah 1:2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the Lord has spoken; Children I have raised and exalted, yet they have rebelled against Me. 3 An ox knows his owner and a donkey his master's crib; Israel does not know, my people does not consider.
  • Isaiah says that despite G-d punishing them the people are not turning to G-d. The land is destroyed by enemies and there are only a few righteous people left in the land
    • Isaiah 1:7 Your land is desolate; your cities burnt with fire. Your land-in your presence, strangers devour it; and it is desolate as that turned over to strangers.
  • In the passage that Paul quotes, it is in fact that a few people are left over in Israel after the Assyrians took the rest into exile. This has nothing about these people are saved from sin because they obeyed the law and all Christians are saved because they believed in the blood of Jesus
  • So here to Paul twists the passage to meet his needs.
Isaiah 28
  • This chapter is about the wickedness of the leaders of Ephraim [10 northern tribes] and to some extent Judah also [though less]. These leaders were doing injustice.
    • Isaiah 28:7 These, too, erred because of wine and strayed because of strong wine; priest and prophet erred because of strong wine, they became corrupt because of wine; they went astray because of strong wine, they erred against the seer, they caused justice to stumble.
  • These leaders boast that no one can destroy them
    • Isaiah 28:15 For you said, "We have made a treaty with death, and with the grave we have set a limit; when an overflowing scourge passes, it shall not come upon us, for we have made lies our shelter and in falsehood have we hidden ourselves.
  • G-d says, that he has laid a stone in the foundation of Zion and anyone who believes that a redeemer will come to Zion will not fear the enemy. Paul twists this passage to say that Jesus is the corner stone and because Jews did not believe in Jesus, their sins were not forgiven.
  • In all fairness where do you see anything about sin or forgiveness or heaven or hell in this passage? Even the Greek text does not have anything about atonement or salvation.
    • [Chabad] Isaiah 28:16 Therefore, so has the Lord God said: "Behold, I have laid as a foundation a stone in Zion, a fortress stone, a costly cornerstone, a foundation well founded; the believer shall not hasten.
    • [NIV] Isaiah 28:16 So this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic."
