Did Moses, David & Isaiah Prophesy that the Jews will not understand the "Jesus Gospel"? ~ Cross reference of Romans 10:18-20 to Psalm 19:5, Deuteronomy 32:20, Isaiah 65:1-2

Paul in these passages asserts that the Jews were supposed to hear the good news about Jesus but were helpless as Moses, David & Isaiah prophesied that they will not believe in the Good news. They also prophesied that this good news will be accepted by the gentiles and they will be saved by their belief in Jesus.

Let us examine all the passages Paul cross references to check if his assertions are right.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Romans 10:18 But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did: “Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”[i]

Romans 10:19 Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, “I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding.”[j]

Romans 10:20 And Isaiah boldly says, “I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me.”[k] 21 But concerning Israel he says, “All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people.”[l]

Psalms 19:1 For the conductor, a song of David. 2 The heavens recite the glory of God, and the sky tells of the work of His hands. 3 Day to day utters speech, and night to night tells knowledge. 4 There is neither speech nor words; their voice is not heard. 5 Their line goes forth throughout the earth, and their words are at the end of the world; for the sun He made a tent therein.

Deuteronomy 32:20 And He said, "I will hide My face from them. I will see what their end will be, for they are a generation of changes; they are not [recognizable] as My children whom I have reared. 21 They have provoked My jealousy with a non god, provoked My anger with their vanities. Thus, I will provoke their jealousy with a non people, provoke their anger with a foolish nation.

Isaiah 65:1 I allowed Myself to be sought by those who did not ask; I allowed Myself to be found by those who did not seek Me, I said, "Here I am; here I am!" to a nation not called by My name.

Paul states that the Jews did hear the good news that if they believe that Jesus died for them, their sins will be forgiven. He quotes Psalm 19 to show that this was prophesied by David that the "good news of Jesus" will be preached to the Jews. Then he goes onto say that the Jews would not accept Jesus as Moses prophesied in Deuteronomy 32. Paul finally says that because the Jews will not accept Jesus, the gentiles will come to know the good news as Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 65. This is a big one but we will get through it.

Did the Jews not hear the good news?
  • If you read the below passages you will see that David is talking about how the heavens and the sky reveal the beauty of G-d's creation & show how wise G-d is. Not sure how Paul saw Jesus, Messiah, Cross, Blood, Resurrection, salvation? In fact David says nothing about anyone speaking, he says just the opposite that G-d's creation speaks about G-d's wisdom.
    • Psalm 19:1 For the conductor, a song of David. 2 The heavens recite the glory of God, and the sky tells of the work of His hands. 3 Day to day utters speech, and night to night tells knowledge. 4 There is neither speech nor words; their voice is not heard.
Did Israel not understand?
  • Paul after "establishing" that the Jews did indeed hear the good news, he goes onto say that they were not supposed to understand the "good news" because Moses prophesied about then in Deuteronomy 32 that they will not understand.
  • If you read Deuteronomy 32, Moses is prophesying about the evil that Israel will fall into. Remember this is the section where Moses dies and Israel has not yet entered the promised land.
  • Paul first quotes the second half of the passage to make his point that Jews will feel jealous because the gentiles have found Jesus. If you read the first half and a few verses before you will see why G-d says "I will provoke their jealousy with a non people, provoke their anger with a foolish nation.". It is because Israel will run after idols.
    • Deuteronomy 32:21 They have provoked My jealousy with a non god, provoked My anger with their vanities. Thus, I will provoke their jealousy with a non people, provoke their anger with a foolish nation.
    • Deuteronomy 32:16 They provoked His zeal with alien worship; they made Him angry with abominations deeds. 17 They sacrificed to demons, which have no power, deities they did not know, new things that only recently came, which your forefathers did not fear. 18 You forgot the [Mighty] Rock Who bore you; you forgot the God Who delivered you.
  • If you read verse 17 G-d says they believed new things that only recently came. This is exactly what Paul came up with about Jesus and salvation through faith in Jesus. Kind of ironic that Paul uses a passage that exposes his lie, don't you think?
Did Isaiah say that because Jews rejected Jesus, the gentiles will Jesus?
  • If you read Isaiah 65 in context, G-d is talking about how Israel when it went into exile did not turn away from evil. Isaiah 64 talks about how Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and the temple and took the people captive.
    • Isaiah 64:9 Your holy cities have become a desert; Zion has become a desert, Jerusalem a desolation. 10 Our sanctuary and our glory, wherein our forefathers praised You is burnt with fire, and all our coveted places have become a waste.
  • In Isaiah 65:1 G-d is saying that he wanted Israel to return to him but they did not and did not want to be called G-d's chosen people. Even if Paul insists that verse 1 is about gentiles, you will see that in verses 2-5 this nation is into so much evil. Surely this will not apply to the gentiles who believed in Jesus and are saved right?
    • Isaiah 65:2 I spread out My hands all day to a contrary people, who go in a way that is not good, after their thoughts. 3 The people who vex Me to My face continually; those who sacrifice in gardens and burn incense on the bricks. 4 They sit among the graves, and with corpses they lodge; those who eat swine flesh, and broth of abominations is in their vessels. 5 Those who say, "Keep to yourself, do not come near me for I am holier than you"; these are smoke in My nostrils, a burning fire all day long.
