Were all remnant of Israel saved by grace? ~ Cross reference of Romans 11:5 to 1 Kings 19:18

Paul in Romans 11 is grappling with a very important question and that is "If god sent Jesus as the messiah to redeem Israel [from sins which is no where in the Tanakh] then god failed as only a small group of Jews believed in Jesus"

So Paul tries to patch this issue with making a statement that Just as G-d kept a remnant for himself during the time of Elijah, he kept a few Jews that believed in Jesus and thereby kept his promise to Israel.

Kind of lame since these few Jews disappeared within the next 100 years and the church for last 2000 years has been a gentile religion.

Only in the last 30 years a small number of Jews have started to call themselves as the "messianic Jews" and these people keep the law and believe that Jesus is their messiah but not god as Christians believe.

Paul's assertion that G-d elected 7000 Jews for himself during the time of Elijah is the way he has always chosen by his grace to keep Israel alive and hence fulfill his promise he made is pathetic as even if you see Elijah's time, the issue was with the 10 Northern tribes and not the whole of Judah that was faithful to G-d.

Let us see if G-d elected these 7000 people by his grace of their righteousness of keeping the law and not bowing down to Baal.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Romans 11:1 I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel: 3 “Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me”[a]? 4 And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”[b] 5 So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. 6 And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

1 Kings 19:18 And I will leave over in Israel seven thousand, all the knees that did not kneel to the Baal and every mouth that did not kiss him."

  • If you read 1 Kings 19, Elijah is complaining to G-d that he is the only prophet left in Israel who has been zealous for G-d and every other person has turned away from him to worship Baal.
  • G-d Elijah that he is not the only one but there are 7000 more who have been faithful to him and have not bowed down to Baal.
  • This passage does not say anything about these 7000 being shown grace for doing nothing. G-d says he will save them because they did not worship Baal.
  • Paul uses the phrase "I will leave over" to say G-d saved them by grace.
  • 1 Kings 19 is not talking about G-d saving these people from sins but from being killed by Jezebel.
  • Paul had to drive home the point that these 7000 were saved by grace to push this theology that only through faith in Jesus one can be saved.
  • He further pushes this point that in each generation right up to Jesus time, G-d has been saving a remnant for himself through grace, whereas you find  Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and several other prophets talking about the remnant as people that were true to G-d and kept the law.
  • G-d promised his chosen people Israel that he will preserve his people if they keep his commandments and cling to the ONE TRUE G-D of the universe. Below are some passages that affirm what G-d said.
  • Deuteronomy 7:9 Know, therefore, that the Lord, your God He is God, the faithful God, Who keeps the covenant and loving kindness with those who love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations.
  • Deuteronomy 30:9 And the Lord, your God, will make you abundant for good in all the work of your hands, in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your soil. For the Lord will once again rejoice over you for good, as He rejoiced over your forefathers, 10 when you obey the Lord, your God, to observe His commandments and His statutes written in this Torah scroll, [and] when you return to the Lord, your God, with all your heart and with all your soul.
  • Psalm 103:17 But the Lord's kindness is from everlasting to everlasting upon those who fear Him, and His charity to sons of sons. 18 To those who keep His covenant and to those who remember His commandments to perform them.
  • All that said, if you look back at history, the disciples and Jews that followed Jesus disappeared into oblivion in a couple of generations. God did not preserve these people else we should have had amazing Christians from the line of Peter, John, James, Matthew. They were not preserved.
  • As of 2012, United States has between 175,000 and 250,000 messianic Jews and within Israel there are only 10,000. As you can see most of the Messianic Jews are in the US where they have grown up outside the teachings of the Torah. Click on this link to see what kind of pathetic state these people were when they "found Jesus". As of 2019 there are 14.8 MN Jews with over 7 MN in Israel. So you get the point. G-d preserves his people who obey the law and worship the ONE TRUE G-D of the universe.
