Will we be made righteous by faith? ~ Cross reference of Galatians 3:11 to Habakkuk 2:4

Paul cross references Habakkuk 2:4 to say that the righteous will be justified by faith. There are a couple of issues to this assertion.
Habakkuk is not talking about faith in the messiah [Jesus]. he is talking about how the righteous people will live by the faith they have in G-d and the righteous life they are living.

While Christians can pick 2-3 passages that are not clear what the faith in these passages are in or about, there are several clear passages that talk about righteousness coming from obeying the law.

All Greek Text references are from NIV and Tanakh references are from Chabad.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.

My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.

G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.

Galatians 3:11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”

Habakkuk 2:4 Behold, it is puffed up-his soul is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.

  • Paul asserts that Habakkuk is talking about a person becoming righteous if they live by faith. The issue with this passage is that, it is not clear if Habakkuk is saying this is faith in the "good news" / faith in the blood of Jesus.
  • There are several passages in Tanakh that clearly say that the a person can be righteous in the sight of G-d if they obey the law, love & fear G-d. This means we have faith in G-d and that should lead to obeying G-d's laws.
  • Tanakh seldom talks about righteousness as the Greek text talks. While the Greek text talks about righteousness leads to heaven or eternity, Tanakh talks about prosperity and long life in this life. You will find 3 passages that talk about resurrection and this will be when the G-d restores the earth in the messianic age.
  • Habakkuk was a prophet for Judah during the reign of King Josiah. This book is in the from of a question and answer format where Habakkuk asks a question that bothers him and G-d responds to Habakkuk with the answer he needs.
  • In Chapter 1 Habakkuk is concerned about the impending attack of Nebuchadnezzar. He says that the way Babylon is rising, in no time Israel will be a defeated and the people will lose faith in the Torah.
  • G-d responds to Habakkuk saying that this has to happen [Habakkuk 1:5-10]
  • G-d says that he will punish Babylon because they think that they achieved all these victories because of their might and their gods. [Habakkuk 1:11]
  • Habakkuk then responds to G-d calling out how great and just G-d is but that wicked men overpower the week and destroys the righteous [Habakkuk 1:12-17]
  • Habakkuk than takes a stand that he will wait for G-d to respond to why he allows these wicked people to thrive. [Habakkuk 2:1]
  • G-d responds to Habakkuk that the wicked man is all puffed up with pride and greed to overpower the weak but G-d will judge these wicked people [basically Babylon] and the wicked people in Israel. G-d says but the righteous who are in Israel will like because of their faith [in G-d and Torah][Habakkuk 2:2-19]
  • Finally in Habakkuk 3 you see that Habakkuk acknowledges that G-d is Just and that he will be merciful even in his anger toward Israel. He writes such beautiful things about the power of G-d and how he has shown mercy to Israel in the past and and he will await its redemption from Babylon when they repent.[Habakkuk 3:13]
  • Finally he ends his poem with a beautiful passage that even if nothing good happens to Israel he will wait on G-d. Such a lovely passage had to call it out.
    • Habakkuk 3:17 For a fig tree shall not blossom; neither is there produce on the vines. The labor of the olive tree shall fail, and the grain field shall not produce food. The flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no cattle in the stalls. 18 Yet, I will rejoice in the Lord; I will jubilate in the God of my salvation.9 God the Lord is my strength. He made my feet [as swift] as the hind's, and he guides me on my high places. To the conductor [to play] with my melodies!
  • In all this where do you see Jesus, cross, crucifixion, resurrection, Paul preaching to gentiles, gentiles believing in Jesus and being saved?
