Is Jesus the Corner, Precious, Rejected, Stumbling stone? ~ Cross reference of 1 Peter 2:6-8 to Isaiah 28:16, Psalm 118:22, Isaiah 8:14
Peter says in this chapter that the believers of Jesus are living stones that are part of a spiritual building that has Jesus as the center. He quotes a few passages from Tanakh to say that this was the plan even before the creation and the Jews just did not get it.
He cites that Jesus is the precious corner stone for those whose eyes are open and accept him as their savior. Jesus is the rejected stone for those who rejected him, Jesus is the stumbling stone for those who hear about Jesus but do not accept him.
Since peter has covered all the bases, let us see if Tanakh supports this claim.

This post is not intended to offend anyone's faith but for those people who are Seeking the truth of THE ONE TRUE G-D of the universe to who we owe all our love, gratitude & devotion.
My encouragement to you is that you read the whole chapter of Tanakh that the Greek text quotes so you get the context and understand what G-d actually said.
G-d Bless and Seek THE Truth.
1 Peter 2:6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.” 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were destined for.
Isaiah 28:16 Therefore, so has the Lord God said: "Behold, I have laid as a foundation a stone in Zion, a fortress stone, a costly cornerstone, a foundation well founded; the believer shall not hasten. 17 And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet, and hail shall sweep away the shelter of lies, and water shall flood the hiding place.
Psalm 118:22 The stone that the builders rejected became a cornerstone.
Isaiah 8:14 And it shall be for a portent and a stone upon which to dash oneself and for a rock upon which to stumble for the two houses of Israel, who came to be for a snare and a trap for the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
Isaiah 28
- In this chapter, Isaiah is talking about the rebellion of Ephraim [10 northern tribes].
- Isaiah 28:1 Woe is to the crown of the pride of the drunkards of Ephraim and the young fruit of an inferior fig is the position of his glory, which is at the end of a valley of fatness, crushed by wine.
- Through verse 3-13 G-d talks about the wickedness of Ephraim and the punishment that will come on him
- Isaiah 28:3 With the feet, they shall be trampled, the crown of the pride of the drunkards of Ephraim. 4 And his glorious beauty shall be the young fruit of an inferior fig, which is on the head of the valley of fatness; as a fig that ripens before the summer, which, if the seer sees it, he will swallow it while it is still in his hand.
- From verse 14-15 G-s warns Judah[2 northern tribes] that they should not follow the path of Ephraim. They think they are safe and even death cannot touch them.
- Isaiah 28:14 Therefore, listen to the word of the Lord, men of scorn, allegorists of this people who are in Jerusalem. 15 For you said, "We have made a treaty with death, and with the grave we have set a limit; when an overflowing scourge passes, it shall not come upon us, for we have made lies our shelter and in falsehood have we hidden ourselves.
- Peter quotes verse 16 that the stone that G-d has laid in Zion is Jesus. The issue with this assertion is that if you read the next few verses, you will see that this is a false claim. This is yet to happen.
- Isaiah 28:16 Therefore, so has the Lord God said: "Behold, I have laid as a foundation a stone in Zion, a fortress stone, a costly cornerstone, a foundation well founded; the believer shall not hasten.
- If you read verse 17 you see that G-d will remove all injustice in Israel and there will be no more lies or self dependence but their trust will be in G-d.
- Isaiah 28:17 And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet, and hail shall sweep away the shelter of lies, and water shall flood the hiding place.
- This prophecy is about how Assyria and Rezin son of Remaliah [king of Israel] will be destroyed. The Stone that is being talked about in this chapter is about how 185,000 Assyrians will be killed by G-d's angel.
- Isaiah 8:3 And I was intimate with the prophetess, and she conceived, and she bore a son, and the Lord said to me, "Call his name Maher-shalal-hash-baz. 4 For, when the lad does not yet know to call, 'Father' and 'mother,' the wealth of Damascus and the plunder of Samaria shall be carried off before the king of Assyria."
- Let us first see the context of Psalm 118 and what this Psalm is saying.
- This is a Psalm where the author is not mentioned, but from the content and style we can safely assume this is written by David.
- If you read verses 1-4 the author is talking about how kind G-d is.
- Verses 5-9 the author says he called out to G-d when in trouble and G-d answered him. He also says that he would trust in G-d rather than in man.
- Verses 10-14 talk about the authors enemies and their desire to hurt him but how G-d helped him overcome the enemies
- Verses 15-29 talk about how the author wants to praise G-d for delivering him from his enemies and death.
- Matthew picked up verse 22 [verse 21 in the Greek Text] to say that this Psalm is talking about Jesus being the cornerstone that was rejected.
- Let's see some issues that say that Psalm 118 is not talking about Jesus.
- Verse 6 says that man cannot harm this person in any way. - Jesus was killed by men.
- Verse 7 says G-d will help him take revenge on his enemies. -,Jesus prayed for his enemies
- Verse 10-12 says many nations have surrounded him but he will destroy these nations. - No nations where against Jesus. Everyone loved him and he was a popular guy going around healing people & feeding them.
- Verse 17 he says he will not but live to tell people about the greatness of G-d. - Jesus died !!!
- Verse 18 he says G-d has chastised him. - Why does Jesus need chastising, he was a sinless lamb that took away sins of all people who believed in him
- All that said, David was rejected by his father who thought he was not worthy to be presented to Samuel, Saul rejected him even though he knew G-d anointed him as king, His wife rejected him because he danced when the arc was brought into Jerusalem, his son rejected his father and tried to take his throne. So logically the author says that though the world rejected him he has become the corner stone of Israel.
- This Psalm is talking about David who ruled for 40 years while Jesus was killed after a 3 years mission of teaching and healing people and never ruled anyone.
